The Aufanian Matronae
are Celtic Goddesses worshiped at Roman times in Bonn. In today's location of the Bonn Minster church there used to be a temple containing 37 consecration stones.
This would have made Bonn the most distinguished matrons' cult place. The consecration stones were dug up from the foundations of the church in 1928 and have since been hidden away in the store rooms of the Rhenish Museum. A copy is on view at the Bonn Frauenmuseum and at the workshop of Marianne Pitzen, new matronae grow back constantly - this time life-sized and often red in colour. They are meant to transfer the positive powers of the matronae into our time. The over-sized dimensional bonnets represent wisdom and creativity.
Welcome to the Frauenmuseum in Bonn. Enjoy our exhibitions!
